WHAT IS KARATE ?
Karate
is a system of fighting which originated on the island of Okinawa, some
450 kilometres Southwest of Japan. The term Karate means "open or
chineese Hand" and first appears in the latter half of the seventeenth
century. Karate is a well organised and regulated fighting system using
punches, kicks and strikes as it's weapons, combined with smooth,
flowing evasive movements. Over the years much work as been done on the
development of impact force with the result that Karate blows can be
extremely forceful. With it's vast range of techiriques Karate covers a
broad spectrum of Self Defence.

WADO RYU
Wado Ryu (Wado -Peace Ryu -School)
therefore means school of peace or way of peace and was founded in 1934
by Hironori Ohtsuka who practised Budo (the Martial Art of Japan) and
Jui-Jitsui. The Wado Ryu style of Karate is light and fast, using
evasion and deflection rather than brute strength. Wado Ryu also
includes a few throws and locks which are generally rare in other forms
of Karate. From Oshtsuka's training in Jui-Jitsui, a system was
developed called Kihon Kumite, which is pre-arranged pair form
sparring, involving short, high level movements and sophisticated
evasion: By practising Kihon Kumite the Karateka is taught to move with
an attack drawing it out and using it's strength/energy to defeat it.
Wado Ryu stances are high; lending themselves to rapid, whiplash
movements in which a technique is driven out hard and then snapped
back. Moves are short and crisp with blows travelling a short distance.
